Storage essentials

  • Unused pens: store in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.
  • Never freeze: discard the pen if it has been frozen.
  • After first use: a KwikPen may be kept unrefrigerated at no more than 30°C for up to 30 days, then it must be discarded.
  • Protect it: keep the cap on, keep away from heat and do not store the pen with a needle attached.
  • Check the medicine: do not use a damaged pen or liquid that is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles.

Travelling checklist

Before booking

Check your airline, airport and destination-country rules for medicines and needles.

Keep proof

Carry the pharmacy label and a copy of your prescription or medicine list. Some destinations may require additional documentation.

Use hand luggage

Keep your pen and essential supplies with you where possible so they are less likely to be lost or exposed to extreme hold temperatures.

Protect the temperature

Use suitable insulated storage if refrigeration is needed. Do not place the pen directly against ice or allow it to freeze.

Pack supplies

Take enough compatible needles and a suitable sharps container or ask how to dispose of needles safely at your destination.

Plan ahead

Request prescriptions in good time. The practice may not be able to replace medicine lost or damaged abroad.

What about time zones?

You do not have to inject at exactly the same clock time each week. Keeping the same weekly day is usually simplest. If you need to change the day, make sure there are at least three days between injections.

For a large time-zone change or a complicated itinerary, plan the dates in advance and ask a pharmacist or clinical team if you are unsure.

Hot destinations

A car, windowsill, beach bag or luggage left in direct sun can exceed 30°C quickly. Use temperature-appropriate storage and keep the pen shaded. If you think it became too hot or froze, do not guess—ask a pharmacist or the manufacturer for advice before using it.

Do not take an extra dose to replace a damaged pen

If a dose is missed because a pen is lost, frozen or damaged, follow the official missed-dose rules or ask for advice. Never double the next dose.
