Habits & healthy living

What is getting in the way?

When a change is difficult, the problem may be the plan or the circumstances—not you.

A behaviour becomes easier when three things line up: you are able to do it, your circumstances allow it and it feels worthwhile. NICE describes these as capability, opportunity and motivation.

Ask three questions

  1. Can I do it?
  2. Does my life make it possible?
  3. Do I have a reason and enough readiness to begin?

Capability: can I do it?

Capability includes knowledge, skills, physical ability and mental energy. Pain, breathlessness, fatigue, disability, low confidence, unfamiliar cooking skills or not knowing where to start can all matter.

A better plan might involve chair-based movement, physiotherapy advice, one familiar recipe, written instructions, a smaller first step or support from someone with the right skills.

Opportunity: does my life allow it?

Opportunity includes time, money, transport, food access, housing, work, caring responsibilities, culture and support from other people. These are real influences—not excuses.

You might need a cheaper option, an activity closer to home, food that works for the whole household, an evening plan for shift work, help with benefits or housing, or a friend to join you. A social prescriber may help when practical or social barriers are central.

Motivation: why would I keep doing it?

Motivation includes values and intentions, but also habits, emotions and automatic reactions. Wanting better health does not automatically make every action feel easy today.

Link the action to something meaningful, make the immediate benefit visible and reduce the effort needed to start. If you are not ready, noticing that honestly can be more useful than making a plan you never wanted.

Use the answer to redesign the plan

Choose the weakest of the three areas and change one thing:

  • Capability: learn, practise, adapt or ask for skilled support.
  • Opportunity: change the time, place, cost, environment or social support.
  • Motivation: reconnect with what matters, make the action smaller or choose a different action.

A plan that fits beats a perfect plan

Write: “The main thing making this difficult is…”

Then: “One change to the plan or environment could be…”

Next: turn that into one realistic action
